UEIL and Dr. Elisa Konofagou were highlighted in the recently published news in IEEE Spectrum for pioneering the use of focused ultrasound to repeatedly and safely open the blood–brain barrier in children with diffuse midline glioma.
Focused ultrasound from UEIL was recently featured in CUIMC News as the first technique shown to safely open the blood-brain barrier in children undergoing treatment for brain cancer. This noninvasive approach uses sound waves to temporarily loosen the barrier so chemotherapy drugs can more effectively reach the tumor, and UEIL’s work has demonstrated that the barrier can be reliably opened and then restored without compromising safety.

Columbia Technology Ventures has announced a new coherence factor–based passive acoustic mapping (PAM) platform from UEIL that enables real-time monitoring of transcranial focused ultrasound (FUS).

We’re excited to share that a new paper, “A multifunctional theranostic ultrasound platform for remote magnetogenetics and expanded blood-brain barrier opening,” has been published in Brain Stimulation (DOI: 10.1016/j.brs.2025.10.006). Led by Alec Batts, the study demonstrates the first focused-ultrasound delivery of magnetic nanoparticles to the brain and non-invasive co-delivery of voltage indicators and thermoreceptors for magnetogenetics.
