Published in IEEE Spectrum: Ultrasound Opens New Front Against Lethal Brain Cancer in Kids

UEIL and Dr. Elisa Konofagou were highlighted in the recently published news in IEEE Spectrum for pioneering the use of focused ultrasound to repeatedly and safely open the blood–brain barrier in children with diffuse midline glioma.

The article showcases the Delsona Therapeutics UltraNav platform, co-founded by Konofagou, which pairs focused ultrasound with microbubbles to transiently open the barrier and enhance delivery of anti-cancer drugs. Konofagou and her clinical collaborators demonstrated that this technique can be performed at the bedside, in children as young as 10 years old, and repeated dozens of times without compromising safety—an intensive treatment schedule never before attempted in this population.

UEIL’s work is presented as a key driver in a rapidly maturing field of ultrasound-mediated drug delivery, opening a new avenue of hope against otherwise lethal pediatric brain tumors.
