UEIL Lab member Katherine Liu has won an impressive third place at DEBUT Challenge, which is a national NIH competition for undergraduate projects. Liu worked in a team that developed an EyePhone, which is a phone app to monitor the progress of glaucoma. EyePhone works in coordination with a cardboard VR headset to create a virtual reality field for at-home visual field testing. The device uses existing visual field-testing algorithms to assess a person’s vision outside of a doctor’s office, promoting more regular and accessible monitoring of glaucoma progression.

Researchers at UEIL are studying the potential of focused ultrasound to treat Alzheimer's. Elisa Konofagou, PhD, and team at UEIL are using a focused ultrasound system they developed to open the blood-brain barrier in Alzheimer's patients. Read more about it here

We are excited to see our work on Electromechanical Wave imaging showcased in a Science Highlights article on the NIH website. The article gives a concise overview of the technique and summarizes some of our latest findings using EWI to localize the source of arrhythmias compared to 12-lead ECG. Research done by EWI was mentioned at Health Imaging in research that showed that ultrasound outperforms legacy technique at pinpointing heart arrhythmias was discussed. The article can be read here

The IEEE Transactions on Ultrasonics, Ferroelectrics, and Frequency Control (January 2021, Volume 68, Issue 1) featured our paper on Real-Time Passive Acoustic Mapping on the issue front cover. The paper describes an exciting, computationally efficient method of passive acoustic mapping using GPU-accelerated sparse matrix multiplication. Congratulations on the well-deserved recognition to the authors Hermes Kamimura, Shih-Ying Wu, Julien Grondin, Robin Ji, Christian Aurup, Wenlan Zheng, Marc Heidmann, Antonios Pouliopoulos, and Elisa Konofagou!

Elisa Konofagou, PhD, the Robert and Margaret Hariri Professor of Biomedical Engineering and Radiology at Columbia University, and her research team recently treated the first patient in their clinical trial to open the blood-brain barrier (BBB) in patients with Alzheimer’s disease. This award is given to a graduating doctoral student in the Department of Biomedical Engineering who embodies the collective attributes of these distinguished individuals.
