UEIL Intern, Andre Perez, Awarded George Wendell Memorial Medal

April 10, 2026

Huge congrats to Andre Perez on being awarded the George Wendell Memorial Medal and the Thomas “Pop” Harrington Medal!

Andre Perez is a senior studying BME at Columbia, and an undergraduate researcher in the UEIL, helping develop a non-invasive focused ultrasound platform for breast cancer treatment. The opportunity to conduct research at the UEIL has been instrumental in shaping Andre's academic and professional journey, ultimately contributing to the recognition he has received during his time at Columbia Engineering.

He was recently awarded the George Wendell Memorial Medal, one of the highest honors given during graduation at Columbia Engineering, recognizing a graduating senior who best exemplifies character, scholarship, and service, as selected through faculty nomination and a vote of the senior class. He also received the Thomas “Pop” Harrington Medal, awarded to the graduating student who best exemplifies outstanding contributions to the engineering community, along with exceptional academic achievement and scholarly excellence.

Andre was additionally selected for a full NSF fellowship to attend the 23rd International Summer Leadership Academy on Bio-X: AI in Healthcare, Medicine, and Biology, held in Chalkida, Greece, a program that brings together emerging leaders at the intersection of artificial intelligence and biomedical innovation.

Originally from the Philippines, Andre is driven by a commitment to advancing equitable healthcare, informed by firsthand exposure to health-technology disparities in underserved communities. Andre is the co-founder of LionHealth, Columbia’s first biomedical device engineering organization, where he leads students in deploying free medical and assistive technologies for patients across NYC.

Following graduation, Andre will join Medtronic as a Clinical Systems Engineer, where he will contribute to the development of a robotic platform for minimally-invasive surgery. He aspires to become a physician some day who leverages engineering and technology to advance the future of medicine.

I would like to express his sincere gratitude to Shiqi, Rosie, and Professor Konofagou for their mentorship, guidance, and unwavering support throughout my research journey!
