Dr. Melina Tourni's Study Published in PNAS

The study, “Electromechanical Activation and Recovery Wave Imaging for Pediatric Mitral Valve Disease Characterization,” demonstrates how Electromechanical Wave Imaging (EWI) can reveal subtle abnormalities in cardiac activation and recovery associated with mitral valve prolapse (MVP) and mitral regurgitation (MR).

Using ultrasound-based EWI, the team identified delayed electromechanical activation in patients with MVP, particularly near the papillary muscles, as well as prolonged activation and recovery times in patients with mitral valve disease. The technique also enabled noninvasive localization of regions associated with abnormal cardiac rhythms in patients with arrhythmogenic MVP.

These findings highlight the potential of EWI to provide information beyond conventional echocardiography by mapping the heart’s electromechanical activity and may ultimately support earlier detection and improved risk assessment for patients with mitral valve disease and arrhythmias.

The work was conducted in collaboration with NewYork-Presbyterian/Columbia Pediatric Cardiology and the Institute of Cardiovascular Sciences at University College London.
