Science Translational Medicine: Targeted Chemotherapy Delivery in Pediatric Brain Tumors via Focused Ultrasound–Mediated BBB Opening

November 17, 2025

Science Translational Medicine (Vol. 17, Issue 824) recently reported a first-in-pediatric clinical trial using neuronavigation-guided focused ultrasound with microbubbles to repeatedly and safely open the blood–brain barrier in children with relapsed diffuse midline glioma, enabling targeted delivery of the chemotherapy drug panobinostat.

The study showed that the barrier could be opened as often as every two days and at multiple brain sites within the same patient, underscoring focused ultrasound–mediated BBB opening as a promising strategy to expand treatment options for pediatric brain tumors.
