Dr. Elisa Konofagou showcased the lab's pioneering work on the use of focused ultrasound to temporarily open the blood-brain barrier, allowing chemotherapy drugs to more effectively reach aggressive tumors. The technique is currently being tested in phase I/II clinical trials at Columbia.
Grabowski-Mitsotakis, a Columbia alumna who helped establish the University’s Global Center in Athens, praised the innovation and commitment of the research team. Konofagou’s lab is also expanding the approach to conditions such as Alzheimer’s disease and neurodegenerative disorders, with the long-term goal of making these treatments accessible to patients worldwide, including in Greece.
