Columbia University Named Focused Ultrasound Center of Excellence

We are excited to share that Columbia University has been named a Focused Ultrasound Center of Excellence by the Focused Ultrasound Foundation (FUSF)—one of only 14 institutions worldwide to receive this designation. This recognition highlights Columbia’s pioneering research in focused ultrasound (FUS) and its impact on advancing non-invasive therapeutic technologies.

At the forefront of this achievement is Dr. Elisa Konofagou, Robert and Margaret Hariri Professor of Biomedical Engineering and Radiology. For over two decades, Dr. Konofagou and the team have been leading groundbreaking research in focused ultrasound, spanning multiple applications and departments across Columbia University. Their work includes:

  • Blood-brain barrier opening for drug delivery in patients with Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, brain metastases, and diffuse intrinsic pontine glioma (DIPG)
  • Neuromodulation techniques for managing pain and treating conditions like carpal tunnel syndrome
  • Advancements in breast cancer imaging and treatment using ultrasound-based techniques

Dr. Konofagou emphasizes the significance of this milestone:

As a Focused Ultrasound Center of Excellence, Columbia University will collaborate with the FUSF and other institutions to further expand the clinical applications of focused ultrasound. This designation will facilitate new research opportunities, funding support, and knowledge-sharing, accelerating the transition of focused ultrasound therapies from laboratory to clinical practice.

The Focused Ultrasound Foundation's Center of Excellence Program, established in 2009, recognizes institutions demonstrating excellence in focused ultrasound research, training, and patient care. Columbia joins a distinguished group of institutions worldwide driving innovation in this transformative technology.
