Columbia Technology Ventures Launches Coherence-Based PAM for Transcranial FUS

Columbia Technology Ventures has announced a new coherence factor–based passive acoustic mapping (PAM) platform from UEIL that enables real-time monitoring of transcranial focused ultrasound (FUS).

By weighting signals by their coherence, the method sharpens axial and overall spatial resolution while reducing noise, crucial at frequencies used to traverse the skull. The approach also carries low computational cost, overcoming the slow, integration-heavy processing that has historically limited passive cavitation mapping in the brain. 

Validated in pediatric patients, this technology supports safer, more precise procedures for blood–brain barrier opening and tumor ablation, and offers a powerful research tool to study cavitation dynamics.
